Surrey Iron Railway platerails, excavated in the late 1960's. K. Bean.

This is not the SIR but the CMGIR - Croydon Merstham and Godstone Iron Railway. They were two separate railways although physically linked at Croydon.

Peter Burgress comments are correct, that said the line started out as the London to Portsmouth plateway. I think the photo shows the find part of the line by Mr W Harrison then owner of Dean farm quarry. It was excuvated by WT Tharby, Tharby was a retired railway man and an archaelogist. He went to publish the finding & a sketch in the "railway Magazine" Aug 1967
