This belt of land was sold by Lord Hylton in November 1902 and the plots bought 6 months later mainly by Paxton Watson, the architect of the houses shown here. The conditions of sale included a requirement that each house was to be worth at least ?600 and should be fronted with oak fences at least 5' high. These 9 houses were completed by 1904 and are part of the modern Conservation Area. An early resident of what is now The Woodland House was the infant David Lean, later the renouned film director. The rest of the road was developed after the First World War.
