2:15AM Sunday Morning Oct 27 1940. 22 Emlyn Road, Redhill, Surrey.

"The night of October 27th was another one one of sadness for Earlswood. The sirens wailed at 6.20pm, and the welcoming Raiders Passed signal did not sound until past seven the next morning. At 2.15 a.m., a huge bomb, probably 1,000lbs., crashed down on 16, Emlyn Road, demolishing five houses and spreading fearful destruction, over 110 houses being damaged. The death toll was a heavy one, six people being killed; 24 persons were rescued from the smashed buildings and five of these had to be treated in the hospital. Up until that time, it was the Borough's most saddening incident. The proprietress of a grocer's shop was killed, also her two daughters and a grandson, a boy of 14, and another daughter was injured. There was only one survivor in this house. Rescue parties, billeting officers, the mobile medical units and the First Aid squads worked unwearyingly giving aid to the injured and the homeless and the salvage units saved what could be retrieved from the homes of the distressed." The Borough In War Time, by Charles W. Preston.
