The County School for Girls, Reigate.

Comment 1

Geraldine Foy from Horley posted this comment on Wednesday 07 April 2010 09:35:00.

Reigate County School Old Girls should also look at the photos of Reigate Lodge in Church Street as the school was built in the grounds of this estate. The Lodge's entrance gates remain as the school's gates. Old Girls may like to contact rcsoldgirl@yahoo.co.uk

if they'd like to receive the Old Girls newsletter. Our archive has many other old pictures, magazines etc.

To EJ from Ottawa. Have you read Coin Street Chronicles yet, by Gwen Southgate? Her London grammar school was evacuated to Reigate and shared premises with Reigate County School for Girls. There are some fascinating passages in it about being taught in the caves during air raids, and the long walk down the dark driveway during black outs. Read the reviews on Amazon.com (not so many on Amazon.co.uk), it's a great read.

Reigate County School. 1940. The Honor Oak School Magazine No. 20. On September 2nd 1939, 249 girls (out of 450) were in a party which left the Honor Oak School, Peckham for evacuation to Redhill, together with 81 younger brothers and sisters, 10 helpers, 24 teaching staff and two administrative staff. Subsequently 50 more Honor Oak girls came to Redhill. The Head Mistress of Reigate County School invited Honor Oak to share the use of the County School building. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Reigate County School had possession of the classrooms, and on Tuedays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, Honor Oak had possession. On the other days the girls from the school which was not in full possession attended in relays of about 70 for instruction in physical education, music, etc., in the hall and music room. The school could accomodate 300, and the air-raid shelters (the caves) accomodated 440 people. I have The Honor Oak School Magazine 1940 in my possession - get in touch if you are interested.

It s great to see the old school. I was there from 1944 - 1952.

My house was Canterbury. I would be delighted to get in touch with Maureen McLelland now I believe Mrs Phillips a graduate of Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham.Maureen was one of the most honest people that I know. When marking her french Dictation she would not even allow me to add an accent!

I was at the Reigate County School for Girls from 1957 to 1963. I have just read a wonderful book by Gwen Southgate called Coin Street Chronicles. She was in the Honor Oak school when it shared the County school (before my time) and mentions air raids and moving into the caves. Do read this book: ISBN 978-0-5955-1670-4, available from Amazon.com. Helen B Goddard

I was at this beautiful school from 1944 to 1947 when I returned to

London. My friends were Gwen Burrows and Joan Batt. The head Mistress was Miss Aitken, and MissvWalters was the music mistress who introduced me to classical music for which I am ever grateful. I remember going down into the caves under the front lawn when the doodlebugs went over.

My mother was one of the 249 girls.

She struggles to remember that time now.

I will show her the photos.

Where would she have stayed?

My late mother is front row left. Jeanne Margaret Watson as she was then. I have been looking into Banstead Wood POW camp, as Mum was friendly with some of the Germans. She won a German songbook at school. She passed her love of the German language on to me

She was at the school from 1942 to 1944 and then 1945 to 1949 ( was evacuated between 1944 to 1945 ) I have the same picture with following names on back : M Chappell, Audrey Baalam, Claire , Jillian R Dawson, Jane Douglas, Jane Pinock, Mary Stoneham, D Mooore,

David Merritt from Wallington posted this comment on Monday 06 May 2024 20:23:52.

My mother is in the photo, second row, fourth from the left. She described cycling from Sutton to Reigate each day for school, lying on the grass looking at aircraft contrails overhead during the Battle of Britain, and sheltering in the nearby caves in the chalk during air raid alerts.
