I was evacuated age 4 to Merstham and lived in Merstham House from September 1939 ~ summer 1940. My older sister has died and we lived there with June and Francis. Does anyone else remember this period?

My story was the same as the one above but much earlier. I was there in 1959. Group Captain Harris and his family, Tim and Janine were fantastic. I was very happy working there and it changed my life. mr. Smith ran the garden and chicken farm at High Beech. Mr. Nick was a great guy.

My great uncle was a private gardener (his wife a maidservant). Both lived in or close to the houses they served, and on the national census of 1939, their address is given as Ringley, Reigate Road, Reigate. Could they have been in service to the owners ofRingley Park House?

This photo may be in the 1930s or early 1940s. To the right of the building (where tennis courts were later built) you can see the gardens where the girls grew flowers, and in wartime vegetables. The pre-fab canteen wasn't erected until the 1940s. The pavilion is possibly in the top left corner, and that was erected in 1935.

The church entrance seemed to have been the school’s unofficial car park, as that’s where the aforesaid Bond, Morris and Wolseley rested. I remember the Epsom Coaches brining in pupils (students nowadays!) and there were at least two. I don’t recall any Ascension Day outings but do remember Miss Dunn taking some of us up to London in 1953 to see the Coronation decorations. We also saw “Buck House” and walked up Downing Street. I didn’t like football then (nothing has changed there) but did go on a trip to Wembley, Mr. Couston officiating, to see a Schoolboys’ International there, Wales v. England. It was the outing that appealed and I still remember the unusual coach that we went in and other items of transport interest that I saw (nothing’s changed here insofar as my interests are concerned?). I remember carol services in the church, rehearsals taking place in the organ loft (is that what it’s called?) climbing up a steep, narrow stairway I and being impressed by Mr. Couston’s playing, with hands as well as feet, and the result of a stop marked “swell” being pulled out. Well, that’s more than enough, so best wishes to all.

My grandfather was supposed, for one time to have blown the coach horn on a London-Brighton coach. He was listed as an ostler and living in Southwark in 1901, so he may possibly have ridden on the the coach mentioned in the photograph

When I attended the junior school (1959 - 1963), Miss Pocock had graduated to a Renault Dauphine. She used to park it at the top of Breech Lane, near the church entrance. Can recall two other teachers from that period: Mr. Calcutt and Mr. Farrow (who'd carelessly lost a couple of fingers tips at some point). One of the annual highlights was the school Ascension Day outing to a place of educational interest. I can remember trips to Haslemere museum, the Commonwealth Institute, and Runnymede (site of Magna Carta signing).

I attended Woodside school from 1967 to 1969 before moving with my family to Kent. I always had fond memories of my time there but sadly was not in touch with anyone after moving.
As soon as I bought my first motorcycle in 1975 I remember riding back to visit old childhood haunts. I was so disappointed to find that the old school and it’s lovely grounds had been replaced by a new housing estate. 😢
