Thanks, Robert you are correct, we lived at No 47 with my Grandmother who had owned 47 with her husband.
How interesting Beckett, I had heard that there were plans by a company to develop the area. Still not happened even though I can't really see why not being myself a Town Planner.
The house is now very smart with several extensions -at the rear and the side.
I don't recall any coal burner. However, we heated the house with coal in the front room - the lounge. The coal was stored in the cellar.
My father was a great gardener and yes it was a fine garden with originally flowers and lawns at the front part of the back garden and beans potatoes carrots, etc at the far rear. We even played badminton on a lawn close to the old orchard.
When we moved in, I recall that in the cellar there was a row of servants bells

I lived at 54 from the 70,s through to the late 80,s. My parents bought it from the Crusader Insurance company who acquired it hoping to demolish it and build a new road but they never got the go ahead. When we moved in there was a huge coal burner in the dining room and a fantastic garden.

This was the home of Edward Penfold, my great uncle in the later 1910s. He was an Architect, much involved with several buildings around Reigate and Redhill, including the Monument on Reigate Hill. His son, Edward Norman Penfold, was killed in 1918 in WW1.

This is so lovely to read, such a beautiful house with so much history.. great that you can all share stories and hopefully find some more information! Itβs truest great how much information you can find now days and family history is especially important, so very nice to hear π We walk past Wonham Manor to see the deer so often, they put such a smile on my face, especially at this difficult time! Would love to know how long they have been there? How many are there? They all look so happy, playing together and with the rabbits π

I will never forget the flight on the Acdc tiger moth. He teached us snooker and sqash and was a great friend for my whole family. We lived close to his home in Clarence Rd, Teddington.

My grandfather bought the business of Hammonds in the 1890s. With regard to the funeral side of the business all cremation records would be held by the crematoria. South London was used prior to Surrey and Sussex opening. As I joined the business in 1958 on the furnishing side I know very little about the undertaking part. Jan Hutsebaut's purchase in Belgium is interesting in that it was probably a piece prior to WW2 as I cannot recollect labels on the furniture sold in my time. By the mid 60s the stock was entirely modern design much of it Scandinavian and Italian plus some very good British furnishings. I hope that helps.

Henry George Barber was my great-grandfather. He and his wife Annie ran the bakers shop at 84 Monson Road. Their daughter Ada, my grandmother, is the girl standing in front of the shop. She was born in 1896 so this dates the picture to the early 1900's.

I was at the school in the 1970s. I'm not sure if anyone found Rev Hobson or his wife easy to deal but the "progressive headmaster" I had in my state school could be just as difficult with anyone who did not comply with his ideas.
I'm not sure how good the education actually was but I still credit my interest in science and Maths to Mr Davis. PE was in the church hall, play time was outdoors in all weathers, Latin was torture and we were better at football than singing ! My main gripe has always been it was stuck in the 50s...grey flannel suits, ancient text books and woe betide anyone who's parents through they should go to a Grammar School at 11 rather than a minor public school at 13.

I have a copy of the OS map of Reigate dated1896 which shows with northern platform (1) extending further east than the southern one (2). Looking at platform 1 from platform 2 today one can see where the original western end of it was. There was a more extensive goods yard south of platform 2. You can see the goods shed behind the station buildings on that side.

For Penny Stapley, Comment 1, and Roger Campbell Comment 3, above. I was in Beryl Newton's class when my father died in 1956. She wrote my mother a wonderful letter, and they became lifelong friends. She ended the letter: "if there is anything that I can do to help you, or Peter, please do let me know. Remember me to Peter (I was off school for a while) and give him my love."
