Hooley Cottage WAS used as a pub several hundred years ago. There was a special cellar for beer kegs. It may have been only used for a time but it certainly was used for farm labourers from the estate.

I am a decendant of the Stable Familly who lived here in the late 18th early 19th century before moving to Moore Place. We have traced family back to the 15th century and the Munro;s in Scotland. We believe that Dorothy Stable was gifted the house by her father but not sure if he lived here. There is a plaque in the church. We would love to visit and learn anymore about the history and maybe meet any more familly members. Some familly paintings are in the National Portrait Gallary and there is a print of Dorothy with her daughters available. There son Edward was in the Coldstream Guards and was killed at the battle of Waterloo where there is a monument to him.

This was my great grandfather's shop - the photo shows my Great Uncle Ben on the left with my Great Grandad (I think he was called Alfred) with his amazing moustache in the white apron. I remember going to the shop when I was a very small girl and being allowed to sit on the saddles.

I am writing a life history for my children and wanted to include mention of my time as a Guys student nurse at Holmesdale in Spring 1957, so I was delighted to find this website. We were at training school for 3 months before going to the hospital for our main training. Our sister tutor was a Miss Janet James an amazing lady who was always reminding us of how privileged we were to be training at Guys. One of my happiest memories was walking in the bluebell woods nearby.

Jamie Jamieson from Ventnor posted this comment on Monday 17 August 2020 12:26:31.

I lived at Dean Lane for my first six months (January to July 1954) so any memory I have is probably somewhat false. I have the photographs, and I was told it was a happy time. Certainly we all look pretty happy even though the caravan looks somewhat small. I often wondered where the caravan site was but did not even know the name until I found it on the back of another photograph. In another picture of our caravan there is a largish building about twenty years away that looks like a toilet or shower block.

My grandfather was headmaster of this school when it was known as Frenches Road Boys School. I think this would have been in the 1940s. Before this he was headmaster of Reigate Parish School. His final headship before retiring in the 1950s, was Earlswood Secondary Modern. His name was William Basil Parker

Hello Wendy! I was so pleased to read your post, with its memories of my lovely great-aunt Sylvia Ll and aunt Sylvia G. Yes, Sylvia G eventually went on to start a kindergarten in Hampshire. The rocking-horse was probably 'Beauty', a much-loved creature from my mother's childhood. Sylvia Ll continued to have small dogs all her life; and goodness me, I certainly remember all the sales of work and bazaars - a great part of life with my great-aunt Violet. She and her sister Sylvia Ll were ardent supporters of the Church Missionary Society, and also of St Matthew's Church in Redhill. I would love to hear more from you - and I have a photo or two that you might like.

My grandfather, William Molloy White worked for the McAlpine family at Holmesdale, Nutfield for most of the 1930's as a groom and lived in a house in the grounds, also, I believe a Mr Burgess and a Mr Rhodes worked there as gardeners at a similar time. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with any information and/or pictures of Holmesdale, thanks.

Hi we have just bought a couple pieces of furniture which have the company sticker on the back. As I am always interested in the history of these old items, I was wondering when they ceased trading and whether they made their own furniture or sold new or second hand. Might be useful for me to date and confirm or not the origin of the pieces. . Thank you

Steve Kulka from Redhill posted this comment on Friday 24 July 2020 15:01:14.

The first Red Hill Post Office was near Redhill Common, somewhere on Whitepost Hill and Mill Street. That was the old coach route. When the railway station arrived in Warwick Town and the branch line to Kent was added, the town started to grow very quickly. It didn't have a post office, so they closed the Red Hill one and opened a new one in London Road in Warwick Town. 25/11/1891. They used the stamps from the Red Hill one, so Warwick Town became known as Red Hill. They replaced the original Post Office with this one, half way along the left side of the picture, now Prezzo, in 1932. Opened 13th June. When they redeveloped Redhill and built the Belfrey in the early 1990's, the Post Office moved in.

Hope all the staff involved over the years read these comments made by all the girls and realise their work was greatly appreciated. Also hope you all found happiness in adulthood. I have very, very fond memories of Woodside School and Sylvia Lloyd so it was good to find this thread. I was a pupil there in the late 1940s and remember Miss Goulder. I believe she was upstairs in the Nursery and there was a large rocking horse up there. Yes, Sylvia had a riding stable and I was told that during the war years she would go and collect children for school in a pony and trap. It was here that I learnt to ride and when I finally left school I went on to work with horses and teach riding – and I still ride now. Believe it or not I can remember all the names of the ponies at Woodside and the riding instructors! Sylvia also had a Sealyham dog called Chippy. With her sister Violet she arranged what were then known as ‘Sales of Work’ in village halls or similar, where you could buy hand embroidered table linen, knitted and crocheted items along with other handicrafts and home baking, the profits going to charity. I still have some of these items that would have been purchased by my mother and grandmother. Sylvia was very strict but fair, treated us as individuals and taught us according to our ability rather than our age. We were encouraged to read a daily newspaper before coming to school each morning, and I can clearly remember her putting up a map of Korea at the outbreak of that war, which would have been June 1950. We were entered into national handwriting competitions (I think I might have won some certificates!). Sadly my next school was not a good experience – if only I could have stayed at Woodside, I’ll never forget my years there.

In late 1964, when I was still 7, this building was being used as a store room for Northover & Sons (the furniture side of the business I assume rather than the funeral side). We lived in the flat on the top floor of the building. It was accessible by an external iron stairs at the end of the building slightly up Howard Rd but that that can't be seen in this photo

Great to hear your comments Keith. I remember the cellar which had two sections and the servants bells down there. The garden had a wonderful large shed which we used to play in as children. At the top of the house was a huge attic and sky window. We eventually got a huge ladder and I remember discovering it for the first time. It was an amazing house which I am sure has now been completely transformed.

Anthony Catherall from Epworth North Loncs posted this comment on Wednesday 27 May 2020 15:37:45.

The person in the two pictures of the Argocat is Fm. Donald Bambridge BEM. Ti his picture is taken on the forecourt of Reigate fire station with the water tender ladder alongside. Subsequently the Argocat was when purchased attached to Dorking fire station, where I served. The Argocat was judged to be a bit of a 'white Elephant' as I don't remember it being used very much if at all operationally. The other picture is of the vehicle being tryled and is seen leaving the drill yard up a bank onto the cricket field at St Davids Reigade, driven by Donald Bambridge BEM.
