All you have to do is ring the bell on the gates. We put deer back in the park in 1992. During the WW2 the Canadian Army occupied the Manor. Lets get over the pandemic we are in first. How old is your Husband?

I was amazed & delighted to find your image (325) of the house at (113) Bell Street I grew up in 1969-1980. I reckon 325 is several decades before we were there. When my parents bought & sold this house it was known as 'Belldomus'. I have a detailed good quality b/w photo (paper & electronic) of the same rear view of it in Winter 1969 that I would be pleased to give for display on this website page, so let me know how to go about donating an electronic copy. The next owner (or the one after) split it into 2 houses 113 & 113a- I know the names of the 3 next owners from 1980 - about 2015 when the last people I knew moved away to Haywards Heath area (I no longer know them). In 1980 my Father had sold it (whole house- unsplit) for £79,950 !

Hello Helen! Interesting to hear about Woodside after my great-aunt Sylvia Lloyd's time. I'm still wondering exactly where Woodside school was? If it was in Linkfield Lane, was it on the part where the lane bends to go north? I am starting to wonder whether it was the house/smallholding where my great-aunts lived after the First World War, and which they moved from some time after that, my great-aunt Violet buying a house in Oxford Rd (now demolished). It could have been that great-aunt Sylvia turned it into a school. Serge and Alan, who have commented above, might be able to help about location? I have some photos of the garden of the old house

I remember going to the Woodside School, 1969 - 1972, when we lived in South Nutfield. Mrs. Godsiffe was the Head Mistress at that time. I recall researching her sometime later, to find that she had moved to Canada or the U.S. - Seattle, perhaps, to live with her daughter, I believe. I'd love to find some old, old friends again....Susan Watling comes to mind...and a few others!

I also attended intial police training at Nutfield in 1967 as a 20yr old recruit (PC1070) of the Surrey Constabulary. I have fond memories of my time there and my fellow recruits and instructors. I went on to serve 3 years at Chertsey, in Surrey, then transferred to the Metropolitan Police where I served for some 8 years, in L Div and as a mounted officer. I then emigrated to Australia where after a other careers I joined the Australian Federal Police in 1988, during which time I also served as a peacekeeper with the UN, I retired as a Det Supt in 2002. Passing out at Nutfield is still one of the most proudest days of my life in my 74 years.

My mother in law, Patricia Hayward, and her 2 sisters, Dorothy and Joan, were evacuated from London during the war and were billeted at Holmesdale with the McAlpine family, albeit in a separate part of the house. She told me about life at this magnificient house, with servants, liveried footmen, chauffeurs, grooms etc. It's wonderful for me to see a photo of the house from around that time. 'd love to see one of the grounds.

@M Barker ... Westridge is indeed where Francis D'Arcy Cooper lived. However this is not that house. His house was designed by the man who designed Port Sunlight and has more Timber and tiling. It may be that the house in the picture was demolished to make way for it. The house was bought by Francis Reckitt, renamed "Mount Pleasant" and used as a retreat for artists. Google will tell you more. Mount Pleasant was bought by a company who currently(Dec/20) have an application in with Reigate and Banstead to demolish it and replace with a new building. Hope that helps.

Hello again Edward Drake, have reposted my e-mail address for you so you can repost your letter! Yesterday had my 95th birthday so family were here not including a great great grandson, Bernard not yet 1! Soldiering on you might say ~ have very clear memories of your father’s brilliant prep school. I was called up for the Infantry and became a signals officer in the East Surrey’s. Later became a Chartered Accountant and built up a practice which we sold, retaining a few directorships.
Best, Peter

According to the 1881 Census my grandmother who was five lived at Wonham Cottage with her parents and three brothers. Her father is recorded as Ag.Lab which Itake to mean Agricultural Labourer. She later worked in service in Bayswater where she met my grandfather who worked at William Whiteleys. They were married at St Michael's Church in September 1900.

Hi Paul. Think the artist used a lot of license with this, but can think of a couple of places it might be. Would need to check out though. Not easy the way things are at the moment for me. Not heard of Popes Pit? Looking at the side by side georeferenced maps possibly confirms one of my thoughts. I'm sure that you are aware there are lots of old gravel pits scattered across the heath and adjacent ground.

Hello
I was the owner of the cottage for many years and there was a cellar out the back designed for bear barrels.
In 2018 I was still the owner of the property. What historical searches were these? The house was used as a pub during the rebuilding of the pub. There was a concreted over cellar entrance as far as I can remember.
The house had been totally reconfigured internally by. Builder in the 1080s.

My Dad worked for Curringtons in the '50s. I remember him working in the the workshop at the back. We lived in one of the flats (number 3, I think) above the shop until I was 7 (1959). My Mum used to but broken biscuits from Reigate Dairy across the road. She worked as a secretary at Wray Park Garages.

I was at Holmesdale in the 60s. I think I remember Ken Turrell who I believe had a brother called Wayne who lived off Nutley lane. Mrs Hester sold 'Potato Puffs' which I've not seen to this day. My Dodd had a wooden leg and as stated by David Gale sold tasteless home made orange lollies and drinks. Not sure he had much else in that very dark shop....

Thanks for your comment Fiona. The building was a residential house when built at the end of the 16th century and appears to have remained so during its lifetime. Having carried out extensive research on the cottage, there is no evidence of past usage as a public house - especially as the actual Marquis of Granby public house was most certainly right next to it in a separate building. Furthermore, there is no cellar that I am aware of within the cottage - certainly none that was evident during the historical/architectural investigations carried out in 2018. If you know where a cellar was in the house (presumably in the later rear outshot/extension parts?), do let me know by reply on this thread.

I think it’s safe to say Miss Hester was a certified Legend and has had a good impact on all our lives, as did most of the staff. I do also remember the ‘fruitiness’ between Mr Price and Miss Hughes. And once I got sent to Mr Price’s office for being cheeky and instead of the ruler I got a mild telling off and then he gave me a lift to the games field in Alma Rd so I would be late - I was so proud being driven past my classmates walking in a line! I can remember the luxury leather smell of his car to this day.

So interesting to read the comments. I lived in the next flat to Rob and Jan Catt. Mr Yeats (Eddie) was my Godfather and was in the Home Guard with my Dad. At School I remember Miss Francis, Miss Herbert (who had a moustache and always wore Tweed), Mr Wilson whom I hated and pulled my hair. We always had a Film at Christmas and I remember one year it was 'The Dragon of Pendragon Castle' and the Christmas Party with the Jelly having a thick skin on the top. I also helped my Brother Geoffrey carry the milk crates upstairs. Too many memories to mention here like making a slide on the icy playground; the St. George's Day Celebrations, and the Dinky Toy Racing Cars across the Playground. Looking back, what carefree days they were.
