Earlswood incident by flying bomb. June 19th ...

Ed Marshall from Atlanta posted this comment on Monday 10 January 2022 06:35:18.

Regarding the death of Bill Demmming's wife at 98 Earlsbrook: Bill was my Dad's first cousin. We, his cousins in the US, were familiar with the event. I understand that Bill and Mary lived with Mary's aunt, Mary Ann Bath, nee West, and her aunt's husband, Edward Bath (who was also killed). Bill's dad, William J Demming Sr., was also a toolmaker and was a early employee of Monotype. When WWI started he was their representative in Berlin and was unable to return to his family in England until 1919. He later returned to the United States. After his death his tools went to my Dad and are now in my care.

I also remember Umberto, he really was a really nice and fair member of staff. I was there 1975-1976 and remember it well with a lot of fond memories, singing "All Coppers are *****" as we passed the police college at the top of the hill in the mini bus. I do often wonder what happend to all the staff and friends I made there. I retire in 3 years time and have spent my working life in IT. I am now married for 34 years with 4 daughters and grandchildren, so life has been good to me.

I stayed at High Beech around 1975-1976, and remember Umberto, really nice guy. Had a lot of memories specially our sing song as we used to drive past the police college coming back from the youth clubs.

Earlswood incident by flying bomb. June 19th ...

Robin West from Rustington posted this comment on Sunday 02 January 2022 07:44:33.

Bill Demming, an american who moved to the UK in 1900, married Mary Demming (nee West)in 1919. They both lived with Marys mother at 98 Earlsbrook road. Mary was killed outright by the explosion and her elderly mother died days later in East Surrey hospital. Bill was on fire watch that night at the Monotype factory at Salfords where he worked as a toolmaker and therefore survived. He was re-housed in Croydon with just the clothes he stood up in. In 1947 he was remarried to my mothers sister and enjoyed a very happy 2nd marriage. Uncle Bill as I knew him, died in 1988 at the age of 92. I still have many of his work tools which were of course safe at the Monotype, as well as his aliens Identity Book and the fire whistle which he carried on the night of the bomb.

This picture looks like the station access, primarily to the Southbound line on the eastern side of the station. The bridge over the road is therefore in the right hand background.

I remember the entrance to the air raid shelter but it was not accessible at all by the time I was at school there. There were a lot of stories about tunnels joining up (and of course The Castle Grounds are very near) but my mum, Audrey Ward, who knew a lot about the local history and had been down all the tunnels that were known about, said that most of the stories had no basis in fact.

In 1914, this address was for Mr. R. Corry. This was given on the headstone entry on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for Major John Beaumont Corry R.E. DSO who was killed in France 1914 and is interred at The Royal Irish Rifles Cemetery ay Laventie. I speculate that the R. Corry at Ivanhoe was Major John's surviving brother. His family were originally from Belfast and were involved in a shipping line which moved to London. I am interested in the family as I own a memorial bronze bust of Major John executed by Sculptor Charles Vyse.

Thanks Robert. Is the neighbour you are refering to called David? Your explanation makes sense as when we renovated the middle of the house, we found what looked like coach house beams and windowa sandwiched between the walls, with the glass still in the windows!

What a fabulous picture. I lived at 1 South Walk from 1959 until 1975 and this photo pre-dates that by several years. It does not include the pre-fab canteen, or the netball and tennis courts which were there when I was at RCS (1964-1971). Also amazing coincidence that the photo was uploaded on my birthday. Thanks

Correction to my earlier comment. Lots of changes since I was there, after no.69 there was an orchard until no. 71 this is the person you need to speak to. Kellaways at no. 73. Your house was not there at all it is on the site of the coach house of a Victorian mansion called "Dilkusha" which faced on to Doods Park Road. "Dilkusha" its grounds and coach house were all derelict c.1950 which we children all made good use of in the holidays. (No. 78 was the childhood home of the broadcaster Jean Metcalfe)

Speak to your next door neighbour he was also at school with us and has lived there his whole life and I think his Dad was an architect.

Stone House, Reigate. 1907. F. Frith & Co. Ltd.

Christopher Venning from Oxford posted this comment on Monday 06 September 2021 12:06:37.

The Stone House was built in 1866 for Augustus Mordan (1821-1901). Augustus Mordan was joint owner of the luxury gold and silver goods manufacturing company of S.Mordan & Co. With his brother, Sampson Junior he had inherited the thriving company from his father, Sampson Mordan Senior, in 1843. Augustus's daughter Clara Evelyn (1844-1915) became a generous champion of women's rights and education. She was often a speaker at suffragette meetings and she gifted the money to enable the then newly formed St Hughs College, Oxford to build their first purpose built home.

Does anybody have any information on when the original house was built and why? It doesn't feel like it was originally meant to be a part of Deerings Road?

Pine end school was the best years of my life I'm 71 now and I still talk about them days. I never wanted to leave that school. And to this day I still don't know why i was there. Ann Cruickshank I remember Margaret Forsyth I was there in the 50s and left 1963 and Winifred Cottrill was there with us. We use to get up to some naughty things us 3 would go out to the pond and get the frog spawn and bring it in and put it in the girls that wasn't very nice that week. Oh god we got up to some naughty things but it was young girls having a laugh. Those were the best days of our life we were so well looked after there and we cried when we had to leave. I left in 1961 or 1962 I just remember coming home and starting a new school. I don't think any other school would have looked after us like pine end did. I could talk about pine end all week and still have stories to say..
